Banalization has, among other functions, to remove concepts from critical interrogation (Popper, 1981), and this is precisely what we witness when addressing issues related to science, sustainable development, and peace in the African context. Based on an exploratory conceptual analysis (Russell, 2008), this paper aims to highlight the various representations of the concepts of science, development, and peace currently in use on the African continent and proposes a deconstruction of current mentalities. The results reveal an unequal appropriation of these concepts by the relevant African actors, which renders ineffective the mechanisms put in place to meet the challenges of sustainable development and peace in Africa. This paper therefore suggests a paradigm shift (Juignet, 2025) towards a contextual understanding of the links between science, sustainable development, and peace.
