The open-circuit photovoltage is obtained when the recombination velocity of carriers at the junction is very low (Sf→0 cm/S).It corresponds to the maximum voltage that the photovoltaic cell can deliver. It is given by Vphco=lim┬(Sf→0)Vph. When the recombination velocities of minority carriers at the junction are low, the photovoltage reaches its maximum and remains constant: the system is then in open-circuit operation. From this part of the curve, the orthogonal projection of the point marking the end of this regime onto the x-axis allows us to determine the value of the recombination velocity of minority carriers at the junction corresponding to the open-circuit limit, denoted Sfco.
