Excessive noise exposure in school environments may interfere with learning, communication, and pupils' health. This study assessed noise levels and perceived health effects among pupils in selected elementary schools in Abeokuta, Nigeria.
Noise measurements were conducted in four selected elementary schools using a calibrated Smart Sensor Digital Sound Level Meter (AR824). Measurements were taken in five activity areas, namely classroom activities, quiet classroom, assembly area, break time area, and generator house, during different periods of the school day. The questionnaire was distributed to a total of 100 students for data collection on perceptions about noise, sources of noise, health impacts, and methods of controlling noise. Analysis of data was done using descriptive statistics and was represented using mean ± SD and percentages.
Noise levels measured were between 54.1 to 82.1 dB(A). Break time and the generator house recorded the highest noise levels, while the quiet classroom recorded the lowest values. All the measured noise levels exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended classroom limit of 35 dB(A) and the NESREA permissible limit for educational facilities. The major sources of noise identified were pupils’ voices, physical movement, vehicular traffic, and generators. Some of the adverse impacts of noise pollution include annoyance, distraction, inability to concentrate, and problems in learning. The levels of noise pollution in the chosen elementary schools were higher than the recommended standards, suggesting that there is too much environmental noise that affects the students. Noise pollution control has helped improve the acoustics of classrooms.
