Background: Stroke is a leading cause of disability and commonly results in balance impairment, reduced mobility, and decreased functional independence. Task-oriented training has emerged as a rehabilitation approach that emphasizes repetitive, goal-directed functional activities to improve motor performance and balance.
Objective: To review the effectiveness of task-oriented training for improving balance in stroke patients through a literature review.
Methodology: A literature review was conducted using electronic databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. Studies published in English that evaluated the effect of task-oriented training on balance in stroke patients were screened according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Seven eligible studies comprising randomized controlled trials, experimental studies, comparative studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and review articles were included.
Results: The reviewed studies consistently demonstrated that task-oriented training improved balance in stroke patients. Interventions included task-oriented activity training, gait training, circuit training, and task-specific functional exercises, performed either alone or in combination with conventional physiotherapy. The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) was the most commonly used outcome measure, with most studies reporting significant improvements in balance following task-oriented training compared with conventional physiotherapy.
Conclusion: The available evidence indicates that task-oriented training is an effective physiotherapy intervention for improving balance in stroke patients. Incorporating repetitive, goal-directed, and functional task practice into rehabilitation programmes may enhance balance and functional recovery. Further high-quality studies with standardized intervention protocols are recommended to strengthen the current evidence.
