The discipline of graphic design is undergoing a profound existential transition driven by the widespread integration of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), deep neural networks, and latent diffusion models. This review article evaluates the socio-technical evolution of visual communication by anchoring contemporary computational technologies within historical design philosophies, specifically tracing a lineage from the industrial tensions of the Arts and Crafts Movement to the systematic, rule-based algorithmic frameworks of the Bauhaus and the International Typographic Style. By analyzing the mechanics of architectures like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPMs), this paper unpacks the "linguistic pivot"—the structural shift from kinetic and spatial interaction models to natural language prompting and curation. The findings indicate that while AI compression of production pipelines drastically lowers technical barriers and accelerates prototyping velocities, it simultaneously introduces severe systemic challenges. These include professional labor displacement, critical copyright dilemmas, and the phenomenon of "aesthetic flattening"—the homogenization of visual culture through probabilistic regression toward stylistic means. Ultimately, this paper argues that the survival of design’s conceptual integrity relies on a pedagogical and structural evolution. Rather than rendering human agency obsolete, the algorithmic landscape forces the contemporary graphic designer to transition from a manual builder of static forms into a high-level curator, ethical strategist, and meta-designer of living visual systems, ensuring that human empathy and semiotic depth remain at the center of the creative workflow.
