STRATEGIES FOR THE REMYSTIFICATION OF NARRATIVE IN OKKY MADASARI’S MATA NOVEL SERIES: A WENDY B. FARIS MAGICAL REALISM STUDY

Magical realism presents a compelling subject of study, given the rich presence of magical elements in Indonesia everyday life. Magical realism is an artistic and literary movement that merges reality with the supernatural. According to Faris, magical realism reintroduces the magical, disrupts rational certainty, and creates space for mystery within a realistic world. This topic is particularly intriguing to examine as numerous literary works reflect the magical realm within modern existence. This study employs a qualitative method utilizing a magical realism framework. The finding indicate that remystification in the Mata series is successfully realized through the protagonist, Mata, who experiences mystical events involving the butterfly queen in Mata di Tanah Melus, and perceives her communication with Molu the cat, Gama the dog, and spiders as ordinary occurrences in Mata dan Rahasia Pulau Gapi. These mystical events become a reality that Matara no longer needs to question throughout the Mata series.
