THE EFFECTS OF THE NATIONAL LEARNING CAMP TO THE COMPREHENSIVE RAPID LITERACY ASSESSMENT OF GRADE 1 STUDENTS

The Department of Education in the Philippines has implemented the National Learning Camp (NLC) to address issues in basic education such as the development of foundational literacy skills among Grade 1 learners such as rhyming awareness, and letter-recognition skills. This is a quantitative study which employed a One-Group Pretest–Posttest Design. Sources of data include the results of the Comprehensive Rapid Literacy Assessment (CRLA) from five (5) selected public elementary schools; hence, the instrument used was Comprehensive Rapid Literacy Assessment (CRLA) which was then used for the National Learning Camp for school year 2023-2024. The study used statistical tools such as weighted mean, frequency counts, percentage, and Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Test. The pretest results revealed that majority of Grade 1 learners required intensive instructional intervention to which the National Learning Camp is intended to provide.  while the posttest results revealed significant increase in the number of learners who were qualified to proceed with Task 2-B which concludes that many learners improved their letter-sound recognition skills. Therefore, there is a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest performance of the learners in Task 1 Letter-Sound Recognition, Task 2-A (Rhymes), and Task 2-B Letter-Sound Recognition which indicates that the National Learning Camp had a positive effect on the learners’ foundational literacy skills, particularly in letter-sound recognition as determined by the CRLA scores. Thus, recommendations emphasized the need for the continuous literacy intervention programs focusing on the development of Grade 1 learners’ foundational literacy skills.
